  • Graded course discussions and assignments

  • Assisted with online course management

Course Description:

In this asynchronous online course, we will be examining scientific-based reasons why some people get sick and others stay healthy. We will look at how things “outside” get “inside” and how this affects one’s health. Human health and illness are influenced by multiple interacting biological, psychological, social, cultural, behavioral and economic factors. The Institute of Medicine has reported that 50% of cases of premature disease and death are related to behavioral and social factors and yet most medical science curriculum are insufficient in addressing these areas.

This course targets those students who are interested in exploring the emerging science of mind-body medicine. It is appropriate for students studying a range of professional careers having to do with medicine, health and well-being. It will emphasize the interconnection between biological, social, psychological and behavior sciences as they relate to health and disease. This course will also help students who are preparing for the MCAT to increase knowledge in the MCAT section titled “Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundation of Behavior”. During this course, we will look at the research supporting the connection between mind and body and the role behavior and social and cultural issues play in health care. Case-based learning activities supported with current evidence-based studies relating to diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, obesity and pain will be included as they relate to the topic of biopsychosocial medicine and illness. Students will also have the opportunity for self-directed learning regarding a biopsychosocial approach in their area of interest(s).
