A464: Human Tissue Biology

Spring 2020, Spring 2021

My Role:

  • Coordinated histology labs using virtual microscopy

  • Led review sessions and held office hours

  • Graded student exams and projects

  • Assisted with transitioning this course to a flipped-classroom, online course

Course Description:

Online Human Tissue Biology is based on the traditional field of histology that deals with microscopic structure of animals and plants. This view of living things permits the identification of cell-types which are the essential physiological unit of multicellular organisms.

This course will build on the microscopic anatomy to understand physiology and pathology from a cellular perspective. This knowledge is fundamental to careers in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and biomedical research.

This class has traditionally had two components: a lab that focused on the recognition of microscopic structures, and a lecture which integrated the microscopic information with physiology and pathology. The emergence of virtual microscopy technology allows a more integrated approach to teaching, but for historical didactic reasons, we still designate these two aspects, as separate allowing A464 to be considered a laboratory course for major requirement purposes.
